Social media platforms have transformed communication across the world, but serious gaps in language understanding and content moderation continue to place many Somali-speaking communities at risk.
Harmful online behavior including cyberbullying, hate speech, targeted harassment, misinformation, exploitation, blackmail, public humiliation, and clan-based hostility often spreads across platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Telegram, and other digital spaces without proper cultural or language context being recognized.
Many vulnerable individuals — especially young girls, youth, and families — are being targeted through online exposure, threats, fake identities, harassment campaigns, and the non-consensual sharing of private photos, personal information, family details, and children’s images across social media platforms.
Some victims experience fear, emotional distress, anxiety, depression, and social isolation after becoming targets of online abuse or coordinated digital harassment.
Somali Unity Shield works to raise awareness about these challenges, support victims, educate communities on digital safety, encourage responsible online behavior, and advocate for stronger moderation systems and better protections for vulnerable users.
